DR. HOWARD M. KRIEGER

August 19, 1945 - August 16, 2022

It is with profound sense of personal loss we announce the passing of Dr. Howard M. Krieger.

Raised in Toronto by Bertram and Bernice Krieger (predeceased) Howard attended the University of Toronto Medical School.

He was a talented, smart and committed physician. His passion for the disenfranchised provided him with an impressive resume. In addition to a full family practice, he actively advocated on behalf of Midwives, Birthing Centers, Methadone Clinics, Geriatric and Palliative Care, HIV/AIDS, Women’s Access to Abortion and MAID. Most recently he devoted himself to providing much needed health care to transgender community. He strongly believed in equitable health care, humanity and activism.
Howard (Howie) lived a rich life beyond the stethoscope! He was easy to spot in a crowd by his famous Hawaiian shirts. On evenings and weekends, he could be found enjoying live music from around the globe. Those lucky enough to share time with him will remember him most for his wit and wisdom.
Howie loved his family most of all: Mary Lynne his partner in love and life; beloved daughters Devi (Neil) and Aara (Siobhan), dear brothers Steven (Pat), Robert (Marianne) and cherished grandchildren Kai, Zoshia and Zennon.

Many thanks to our friends, neighbors and family who have provided support in so many meaningful ways. In addition, we are extremely grateful for the care he received at The Royal Victoria Hospital, specifically the Respiratory Floor Nurses and on call doctors. Finally, heartfelt thanks to Dr. Devon Turner for his exemplary care, and his respect for Howard’s wishes. He attended to Howard with the highest level of compassion and professionalism.

A celebration of life is planned for October 2, at the Barrie Country Club, 635 St Vincent St N, Barrie, ON L4M 4Y1, from 1-4p.m.

In lieu of flowers, at Howie’s request, donations to the Gilbert Center, Barrie.

I didn't know Dr. Krieger for very long, but in the short period of time that he was my doctor he changed my life in ways I didn't know were possible. I am eternally grateful for his help in allowing me to become the person I was meant to be, and for making the process so seamless for me. My condolences to Howard's family, he will be missed. Rest easy Dr. Krieger ♡

We just celebrated our daughter’s wedding this month. She was helped into this world by the great care of Dr. Kreiger. He guided my wife and I through her pregnancy and was encouraging and caring on the day of her delivery. We were most impressed with his support of midwifery and other aspects of medicine that were on the fringes at that time. It was a great lose to us as our caregiver and friend when he left his practice in Toronto. He was always in our thoughts and he was mentioned in my speech to my daughter during her wedding. We very much appreciate your sharing of his his love and caring he gave to others. Our deepest sympathies to your family. We wish you peace and our deepest sympathies Sincerely Lisa Gibson & Roderick Walker, Toronto, Ontario
