Obituary Overview

Arnold Robert Brown

Brown, Arnold “Arnie” Robert, age 88, of Dartmouth, passed away on June 26, 2020 in the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in Toronto, he was a son of the late Robert and Annie (Darroch) Brown.
Arnie adopted the Maritimes as his home 56 years ago as he began his sales and management career in medical surgical equipment. This allowed him to travel throughout the region befriending people and laying the foundation for his deep and life-long appreciation for this special corner of our world. A year later he convinced Nora to move from Toronto to create a life together and they married and began their family in Kennebecasis Park, Saint John, New Brunswick.
Arnie and the family moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia in 1976 when he had an opportunity to flex his entrepreneurial skills and launch a local branch office of a multi-national medical/industrial gas company. As the family settled into this new life Arnie convinced them to establish roots…literally. Drawing from his parent’s tradition, gardens were established, rock walls built, and a meticulous lawn that became recognized throughout the city was groomed. Arnie and the family also established spiritual roots with their association with St. Luke’s Church, where he found a community of caring and supportive friends and was able to strengthen his faith.
Arnie always had a song in his heart, and he enjoyed expressing this by singing with his friends in myriad Barbershop groups and competitions over the past 50+ years.
An informal but natural community leader, Arnie enjoyed surrounding himself with people who he knew could support one another. At St. Luke’s, the Halifax Harmonizers Barbershop Chorus, on Emma Court, the Pebblecreek condo, Parkland, or recently for the local Green Party, you knew that if you were on one of Arnie’s Lists, that you had been identified as an important person to him and that you could turn to him for advice and support too.
Arnie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nora (Waugh); daughters, Nancy Brown (Norm Lo), Susan (Steven) Leslie, and Roberta (Matthew) Rose; grandchildren Ryan and Sara Leslie, Bronson, Kiernan and Frazier Lo, and Bryce Rose.
He is also survived by nieces, Anne Marie, Donna, and Sandra Elizabeth.
He was predeceased by his brother Greg (Jean).
Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

We have so many fond memories of Uncle Arn and Aunt Nora even though we saw them so rarely. Our parents were the best of friends since the 50s so almost 70 years have gone by. They used to come to our cottage in Ontario with the girls and it was always raucous and noisy, perfect for us and so memorable. Rest well, Uncle Arn. You were a force!
