My condolences to Dan, Tom and their families. Neil will always live in my memory, not only for his presence on the lake including his duties as official judge of the Soles Lake Invitational "Troutarama" but also for the memorable salmon fishing trip to Newfoundland with myself and the late Jim Sullivan.

We miss dear Neil at Soles Lake. From the first day Neil made us feel welcome although we were "outsiders" when we bought Arnold Hughes' cabin on Second Lake. He taught us about the birds, showed us the occupied loon nests, instructed us about hummingbird feeders of which he had many, pointed to the eagles he fed chicken carcasses to. He helped us unload firewood in the boat despite his obvious discomfort with his joints. We had long chats about his experiences on ships up in the Arctic (mine as a geologist), which he could describe in such detail, and about the history of Soles Lake and its inhabitants. There are fewer ducks and hummingbirds since he stopped feeding them. We have missed his friendly waving as we pass his camp, and we will never cease to expect it. Soles Lake is not the same without you, Neil.

My condolences to Dan and Tom and all of your family. My memories of Uncle Neil revolve around laughter, curiosity and generosity. I remember once during a visit to Dartmouth, he cajoled me into going to the theatre to see the movie, The Shaggy D.A. Looking back I know it's because HE really wanted to see that movie! What laughter. Peaceful rest now to Neil, and to all who knew and loved him.

I have lived on Soles Lake since 1987. It seemed an annual spring ritual to see the seal like Neil swimming through the narrows and a fall like ritual to share a dram of rum under falling leaves.
Gone but not forgotten.
