Barb was an important part of my growing up. May she rest in paradise. Gone but never forgotten. Till we meet again ❤️
View MoreIt is with immense sadness that the family of Barbara Lynn Sutherland Degenstein, 56, of Amherst, NS announces her passing, surrounded by the love of her children and sisters, at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center on August 6th, 2023.
Cremation has taken place.
Barbara was born on May 7, 1967 in Antigonish, NS, the daughter of Carolyn and Donald Sutherland. Her family soon moved to River Hebert, NS, where she spent her childhood and teen years. She embarked on a cross Canada career with CP Hotels which included beautiful locales and adventures.
Along with the two greatest joys of her life, her children, Barbara's last move was to Amherst, NS. Being a mother was Barbara’s proudest role as she considered it a privilege to be "Nick and Allie's Mom."
Barbara will be forever missed and loved by her two children, Nicholas of Amherst, NS and Alexandra of Halifax, NS, her father Donald (Rosemary) Sutherland of Moose River, NS, her siblings Stephen (Beth) Sutherland of Spryfield, NS, James (Ann) Sutherland of Summerside, PE, Christine Sutherland of Amherst, NS and Nancy (Steve) Boudreau of Amherst, NS. Barbara has several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins who also deeply mourn.
Barbara leaves behind many colleagues and friends where she worked at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center. A creative and gifted writer, Barbara made many long lasting connections with friends across the globe. Barbara’s online friends were a great source of community and support for her. A lifelong animal lover, she leaves behind her cherished cat Emori.
She was predeceased by her mother Carolyn Sutherland in 2015, as well as her maternal and paternal grandparents, Georgeana and Clarence Richard and Thelma and James Sutherland. The family wishes to thank all of the nursing staff, ward clerks, security, kitchen staff and housekeeping for their compassion and kindness they showed Barbara and family. Special thanks to Fr. Phil Thibodeau, and the Palliative Care team of Amy, Kim, Brenna and Dr. Short. To Barb’s family Doctor, Dr. Bobadilla, we thank you for your compassion, concern, kindness and for just being you as Barb found comfort in your visits to her. To close family friend, Gage, thank you for all of your support and kindness you showed.
Visitation for Barbara will be held at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church Street, Amherst, NS, on Tuesday, August 15th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 16th at 2pm, also at Campbell’s Funeral Home. A private interment will take place at St. Denis Cemetery in Minudie.
Due to allergies, the family asks that people refrain from wearing scents while attending both visitation and the Funeral.
As per Barb’s request, in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Lillian Allbon Animal Shelter.
Online condolences & sharing of memories can be forwarded to the family via: www.campbellsamherst.ca or by visiting the funeral home Facebook page.
