In Loving Memory of Evelyn Smith


It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn Marie Smith age 86 of Amherst on Saturday March 21, 2020 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst.

Born in Tidnish on June 2, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Sherman and Etta (Chappell) MacKay.

Evelyn graduated from Amherst High School and worked for Sherman MacKay Ltd, later for Canada Employment Centre, retiring in 1991 with thirty years’ service.

She was a member of Lady Tweedsmier Club, Red Hats, Brittania Chapter of Eastern Star, and Trinity St. Stephen’s UCW Unit 3. In her earlier years, she was a volunteer for CRHCC Palliative Care. She was always on hand to help neighbors and friends in time of need. She was the eldest of the family.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Greg (Denise) Smith, grandchildren, Molly (Jason Little), Cale, Emmitt, Hayley and Angela (Dan), great grandchildren, Charlotte, Carson, Kody and Tenley, sister, Ruth Beal as well as several nieces and nephews and extended family. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Ansel (Hammer); daughter Lynda Burke; son in-law Philip Burke and brother in-law, Chet Beal.

In light of the recent COVID-19 Pandemic, Evelyn’s funeral service will be private and invitation only. The funeral service will be live streamed online on Tuesday, March 24th, 2020 at 11:00am with Rev. Natasha Pearen officiating. Evelyn will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Amherst Cemetery at a later date.

The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses and staff of the CRHCC, surgical unit, who gave exceptional care during Evelyn’s stay.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Evelyn’s memory may be made to the Lynda Burke Memorial Fund or the Cumberland VON.
