Forever missed & always remembered

JOHN P. (JACK) MATTHEWS   1931-2019

Sadly, we announce the passing of John Pridham (“Jack”) Matthews, 87, of Amherst at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on February 13th, 2019 after a brief illness.

Born in 1931 in Springhill, he was the son of the late John C. and Gladys (Pridham) Matthews.

Following completion of a business program at Mount Allison University, Jack started work with this grandfather at Pridham’s Books and China and went on to operate the company successfully until his retirement in 1995.

Jack was very involved in the community, through Town Council, as a councillor and deputy mayor, and various boards and committees that shared his dedication to community improvement. The Rotary Club of Amherst honored Jack with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award for his community service.

First Baptist Church was a pillar of his life. He served in many capacities including leading the BYF youth group, as a Sunday School Teacher, in the operations of the church, and as a deacon.  He was recently named an Honorary Deacon in honour of his service.

Hockey was a passion for Jack. From coaching church hockey, to his involvement with the formation of the Amherst Junior Ramblers, he was a lifelong fan who seldom missed a game while able to attend.

The cottage at Heather Beach was a favourite place, surrounded by friends and family.

Jack is survived by his loving wife Jean (Burgess), whom he married 1955 as one of his better decisions, and his sons John and David (Rebecca Simpson), and grandchildren Evan, Emily, Quinn, and Marilla as well as nephew Cliff Burgess and niece Wendy Burgess and their families, and several cousins.

Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by a daughter Anne, and brothers-in-law David Burgess and Bruce Burgess.

Family will welcome visitors on Friday February 15 from 6:00-8:00pm in the chapel of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902) 667-9906.

Funeral service will take place on Saturday February 16 at 2:00pm at the First Baptist Church, Amherst, with reception to follow.

In lieu of floral tributes, memorial contributions in Jack’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Cumberland Hospice Society or a charity of your choice.

Dear Jean, we wanted to share our condolences with you and all of Jack's family. It is never easy to have to say goodbye to a loved one. The pain of loss can be unbearable. Our Creator promises us that one day this pain will be just a memory. That beautiful promise can be found at Revelation 21:3,4. Our pain and suffering will be a thing of the past, and we can cry tears of joy as we welcome back the ones that we love so much. We hope you find comfort in those promises.
