Obituary Overview

In Loving Memory

Captain (Ret.) Howard Roy Garrett – 1935-2021

Howard Roy Garrett passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 7, 2021. When he was just 17, Howard joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He spent his youth sailing to exotic ports-of-call and forging lifelong friendships. Later in his career, military postings took Howard, wife Helen and daughters Debrah and Carmen to big cities and small towns throughout North America. Howard was an avid cyclist and runner. He later became a passionate curler, a sport he enjoyed into his late 70s. In retirement, Howard and Helen re-connected with old friends and extended family. They lived on Vancouver Island for a decade before finally returning to Ottawa.
Howard was predeceased by his wife Helen Maretta (1936-2017) and his sister Lois (1938-1991). He is survived by daughters Debrah (Leslie – deceased); Carmen (Rick); siblings Patrick (Karen) and Bernice; grandchildren Jennifer (Austin), Shawn (Heather), Eric; and great grandchildren Issac, Tyler, Addison, Jacob along with many nieces and nephews. Howard also leaves behind Sarah Maguire, his friend and loving companion in his last years.
The family is immensely grateful to the staff and caregivers at Orchard Walk Retirement Community for the compassionate and professional care they gave Howard and the unrelenting courtesy every person extended to his family. During a difficult time, made worse by the pandemic, they always answered the call. The family would also like to thank Dr. Gisell Delgado, Helen Hana, Kelly McBride, Margo Laporte, Isabelle Demers, Siroos Hozhabri, Pamela Johnson and their fellow nurses and PSWs at Champlain LHIN. Their care, attention and support was greatly valued by Howard and his family.
Howard lived a thoughtful, impactful life, and his challenge to we who survive him is to spend our time well. Condolences and Sharing Memories at

Roy lived across the street from us for several years recently. What a lovely and gracious man he was! He always gave a happy wave and warm smile on his daily long walks along our winding streets. He was kind, decent and friendly. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. Our sympathies to his family and friends. Steve, Linda and Angelina
