In Loving Memory

Sharon “Sherry” Brush

(née Smith)

Passed away peacefully, following a very brief battle with cancer, at the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre, on Saturday, October 1, 2022 in her 80th year.

Much loved and devoted wife for 58 years of David Brush. Loving mother of Steven Brush (Sherri) and the late Stephanie Thibault (Alan). Proud grandma of Bradley Thibault, Kara Brush (Nathan MacKechnie), and Jared Brush. Loving daughter of the late Ethel Joyce (née Bishop) and Alexander Storey Erwin Smith. Dear sister of Pat Slabe (Frank), Sandy Southin (late Robert) and Jim Smith (Carol). Sherry will also be missed by her nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

As an educator, Sherry enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career as a teacher, expanding young minds in elementary schools in Navan, Ontario, Colchester North in Southern Ontario, Port Latour in Nova Scotia, RCAF Station Uplands and her much loved Hillel Academy in Ottawa for over 30 years.

A graveside service will be held at Capital Funeral Home and Cemetery, 3700 Prince of Wales Drive, on Saturday October 8, 2022, at 1:00 pm (Garden of the Last Supper), followed by a Memorial Service in the Chapel of the Funeral Home at 2:00 pm. Following the service everyone is invited to join Sherry’s family in the reception room for a time of fellowship and refreshments.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Sherry’s memory to the Science department at the Ottawa Jewish Community School  at Donations in Memory of Sharon Brush  or to a charity of your choice.

I will never forget being a student at Hillel in Mrs. Brush’s grade 4 class. Grade 4 was a very difficult year for me, but Mrs. Brush made things easier and made me feel so very special! She really took me under her wing. She was a fantastic teacher! I will always remember her taking me to Rideau Bakery for lunch on Rideau street. May her memory be a blessing.

On behalf of my children, Zivah Strom and Michael Stocker, and myself, I want to express my condolences to the family of Sharon Brush. She was a dedicated colleague of mine, a hard-working teacher, who devoted her work to stimulating her students to science and math. My children were always conscientious about doing their assignments on time, and neatly presented. I am not surprised that she wished that contributions in her memory should go to the science department at Hillel Academy. She became one of us (staff) with a "Jewish" spirit. All the students who became doctors and scientists owe part of their success to Sharon Brush.
