Obituary Overview

Donald Ralph Ball

Donald Ball, Cole Harbour N.S.,
formally of Chesterville Ontario, passed away on March 20th 2022 at the Dartmouth General Hospital at the age of 85. Don was born in Hull Quebec, however he was raised and educated in Ontario. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 61 years Ruth (nee Bishop), his daughters, Cheryl and Leigh ann Giles (Katt Evans). Adored by grand children, Katherine Bruce (Chris Lapierre), Stephanie Bruce and Jessica Cote (Matt). He also has 6 great grandchildren and one great greatgrandchild. "Chappie" will lovingly be remembered by his brothers James (Dianne), Doug (Lorna), and Graham (Lori). He was predeceased by his daughter Dawne Bruce, parents Ralph and Jean Ball, siblings Robert, Steven and Raymond (Catherine). He served the Navy for 26 years as a marine engineer, retiring in 1980 and then continued to work for DND as a civilian. Don was very honored to have served as a volunteer for 35 years for Halifax search and rescue. He was a man of many talents most of which were self taught. These included woodworking, which involved building his home and cottage, metal working, and being an all around handy man. His passions were, his home garden, the peace and isolation of his cottage in Chester, hunting, and anything that brought him closer to nature. He was a man of few words. However "the thing is see" he will be remembered by many for his ability to engage in a broad range of topics and his willingness to chat with others. The family would like to thank the medical team at the Dartmouth General Hospital who provided such great care. A celebration of Don's life will be announced at a later date. For those who wish to remember Don, donations can be made to the Halifax search and rescue or Canadian Cancer Society.
