The Many Benefits of Walking
Article Posted on
Walking is an easy, low impact exercise that improves the function of both the mind and body.
Unlike jogging or a strenuous workout, it takes surprisingly little effort to reap many health benefits from a brisk, daily walk of 30 - 60 minutes. These benefits include lower cholesterol and improved heart health, weight loss, leaner muscle mass, the control of blood sugar levels and more.
If you’re not used to walking for sustained periods of time, it’s advisable to start slowly and build up your speed, frequency and duration over several weeks. Try monitoring your steps with an inexpensive pedometer, available from your sport shop or pharmacy, and then increase the number of steps you take every day.
Ensure you have comfortable shoes, loose-fitting clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen and water. Take your walk seriously and view it as important time you set aside for yourself.
As with any program, it’s essential to stay enthusiastic. Changing routes, listening to music or joining a walking group can keep you going strong. Even on those sweltering summer days, you needn’t miss a step. Simply take your fast-paced walk around an air-conditioned mall. Just remember to steer clear of the food court.
