Surrey Hospital has received $5,000 from the Arbor Foundation, andValley View Funeral Home and Cemetery raised almost $7,000 with a very successful “Name That Tune Trivia Night” organized by Derrick Pelley and Marlyn Ferguson.
The gift will be used to help with special equipment purchases for the new Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization Unit (CAPSU) which is currently being constructed at Surrey Memorial Hospital. This new unit will be the most progressive in Canada and will be a safe and comfortable place for children and their families who require a short stay (5 to 7 days) in hospital because of an acute mental illness crisis. Children and teens will receive diagnosis and treatment and a care plan from a team of pediatric mental health specialists. Fifty per cent of all lifetime cases of mental illness start by the age of 12. Unfortunately, throughout Canada, only 1 in 4 of acutely ill children receive the care and treatment they need. CAPSU will help change those statistics.
