Obituary Overview

In loving memory

Pickering, Joel

His young and cherished life cut short unexpectedly, Joel Pickering died on Sunday April 5th, 2020 in Kingston, Ontario – just shy of his 30th birthday. He was a beloved husband to Melissa (nee Cordick) and devoted father to Theo, aged 21 months. He was a best friend and brother to Eric and adored son of Harold Pickering and Jane Somerville. He was embraced by Melissa’s parents Keith and Marlene Cordick of Stanleyville, Ontario and his extended family and friends. A kind, genuine and thoughtful soul, Joel lived most of his life on Chestnut Street. He put others needs before his own, unless he was playing a game or was on the soccer field! He lived with humour, care and commitment to others and many of his peers valued his mentorship. He is remembered fondly and with gratitude by coworkers and youth whom he met working in education and recreational programs in North Kingston, BSS and LCVI.

Memories, photos and donation information can be accessed through the Gordon F Tompkins Funeral Home – Central Chapel website. A celebration of Joel’s life will be held in the future. Donations would be gratefully accepted for a Registered Education Savings Plan for Joel and Melissa’s son, Theo,  (Cheques or etransfers can be made payable to Melissa Pickering ) or to the Zal & Rose school breakfast fund.

His family would like to recognize all of the first responders and hospital staff whose efforts for Joel were nothing short of heroic. These are challenging times and we thank you. We are reminded of the preciousness of life and that there can be forces beyond our awareness and our control. Joel’s death was not related to the current pandemic.

It’s an imperfect world, but it’s the only one we’ve got.

It is so sad to hear of such a loss and I can't imagine how hard it is for all of Joel's family and close friends. I only knew Joel as an competitor on the soccer field but recognized him as a gentleman and gentle giant. I am very sorry for your loss.

My deepest condolences to Melissa, Theo, Jane, Harold, Eric and Joel's extended family. I am an old university friend of Jane's. Jane was one of our first friends to have a baby and that baby was Joel. He brought such delight to Jane and Harold. I moved out to the west coast but would visit Jane and family in Kingston almost every summer and watched Joel grow from a toddler to a teenager to a young man. Like Joel, I am an educator and have been so touched by stories of his positive impact on those that he worked with. It is a very special thing to be able to provide such loving companionship and guidance to young people as they navigate school and their world. I am so sorry that you are no longer with us Joel but trust that you are in a good place as your soul continues its journey.
