Obituary Overview

In Loving Memory

Antonio was born the eldest of two children to Joaquim and Maria do Carmo Simōes in Espiçandeira, Alenquer, Portugal. Always adventurous, Antonio left his hometown, making his next home, Lisbon. There he met the great love of his life, by sliding a love note under her door. Maria Isabel Gomes Gonçalves was quickly smitten by his words and beautiful eyes. They married on July 21, 1963. In 1966, the two continued the adventure, and immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. With eyes wide open, they learned English, worked hard, and shared dreams of a bright future. 1 year later, their first child, Richard, passed away at birth. A very tragic time in their life together. In 1969, they were given a second chance, and their daughter, Delilah was born. Antonio worked hard to make certain his family was taken care of and loved every day. Humble and kind, he loved his ‘girls’ deeply. He welcomed, Lauriston ‘Larry’ Shand, as a son, never as son in law. When two grandchildren came along, Elijah Anthony and Laylah Anabel, he was the ‘richest’ man alive. With these two, his love and heart grew even bigger.

He was a quietly generous man, which many did not know, always thought of those who were less fortunate. Antonio loved life, loved the World he lived in, and loved God. Dementia and dementia related illnesses, for 7 years, changed his energies; however, it never controlled his love for his family. In his last months, during the worst moments, the names he called out were always those he loved, even those he left behind in Portugal. And most times…there was a most wonderful smile attached. Dementia did not rob him of that!

We mourn his profound loss, as there is never enough time; however, we promise to continue his legacy of humility, kindness and love. Antonio is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Maria Isabel, daughter Delilah (son in law, Larry), grandchildren Elijah and Laylah, sister Maria Candida Simões Diniz, and loving sister- in- law Maria Helena Gomes Goncalves Simões.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider making donations in his memory to Sick Kids Foundation (a charity he supported with great passion), or Baycrest Foundation for Brain Health and Aging.

Saudade querido Marido, Pai/Daddy, Avo/Vovo.
