Obituary Overview

In Loving Memories

Gary Wellwood, affectionately known as "Woody" to his friends and loved ones, passed away on May 5, 2023, at the age of 75. Born in Toronto on June 16, 1947, Gary was a proud and dedicated supporter of his hometown, particularly when it came to sports. A lifelong fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays, he was also a fixture at his grandchildren's minor hockey games, always in the stands to cheer them on.

In his youth, Gary's talent as a drummer led his band to local prominence, playing at small venues throughout Toronto. This period of his life fostered a deep appreciation for music, including a special affinity for The Beatles and Eagles, whom he touted to his friends and family as, without dispute, the greatest bands in history.

Gary enjoyed a successful career in sales within the corrugated industry, where he honed his skills in communication and negotiation. Eventually, Gary founded Wellwood Containers, a corrugated manufacturing business. Gary successfully ran the company for many years before it was eventually acquired. Those who worked with Gary admired his work ethic and distinct personal touch, distinguishing Wellwood Containers as a highly regarded family-owned business.

Gary had a sharp-witted sense of humour but used it sparingly, reserving his wit for a captive audience; his jokes brought smiles to those around him. He was also passionate about horses, overseeing the breeding and racing processes, and earning many titles and podium finishes throughout his racing career.

Gary is survived by his devoted wife Donna, his brother Dave (Margaret) and is predeceased by his sister Joyce and brother Daryl. Gary will be missed by his sons Kerry (Carolin) and Chris (Tracey), grandsons Jude, Tristan, and Tyler and many other relatives. Gary's happiest moments were spent behind the grill, preparing delicious roasts for his friends and family, filling both their hearts and stomachs. Those who knew him best will remember his generosity and the pride he took in providing for his loved ones.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and lasting memories that will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Gary's memory will live on in the hearts of all those he touched with his kindness and humour. He will be deeply missed.

Donna our condolences got to you and your family. I remember Gary as being a mentor to me and the opportunity of learning from him I will be forever thankful for. Gary and Donna were a big part of my life growing up and I would not be the person I am today if not for you both. I regret not keeping in touch. He will always live on in our hearts and minds.

I met Gary over 30 years ago when he hired me to become part of the Wellwood Containers family. Gary was such a warm, kind, patient and gentle man who always showed care and concern for those around him. I will always remember him for his mischievous smile and great sense of humour. I am blessed to have met Gary and shared so many years with him at Wellwood Containers on through Pearce Wellwood. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this most difficult time.
