Obituary Overview

In Loving Memory

Kondo, Hisako Jean

Hisako Jean Kondo passed away peacefully on August 17, 2019 at the age of 103. Predeceased by her husband Alfred Tsuneo in 1986, her brother George and sisters Kazuko, Yoshiko, and Aiko. She will be greatly missed by her children David (Colleen) and Gail, her grandchildren Dana and Jenna, of whom she was so proud, and her sisters Masako and Sumiko.

Born in Vancouver in 1915, Jean went with relatives to live in Japan in 1933. A bright student, she attended Tsuda College in Japan and then taught at Tsuda College for several years. She returned to Canada in 1949. She attended the University of Toronto, earned a Bachelor of Library Science degree in 1951, and then worked at the Toronto Public Library.

Jean married Alfred in 1953. She began working in the North York Public Library system in 1965, retiring in 1982. During her 17 years with NYPL, she was a librarian, team supervisor, branch head and collections specialist. Jean was an independent and determined person, known for her strong work ethic, firm but fair guidance, and excellent book knowledge.

Jean enjoyed a variety of activities such as line dancing, Mataro doll-making, and volunteering at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. She enjoyed travelling the world and her adventures included parasailing in Mexico, riding horses and donkeys in South America, and holding snakes and koalas. She took vacations well into her nineties and she was particularly delighted to take her grandchildren on trips to Japan when she was 94 and 95 years old. As a centenarian, Jean was a role model for others in her community centre seniors’ program where she exercised and danced on a regular basis.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Highland Funeral Home – Scarborough Chapel on Saturday, September 7th at 11:00 a.m., followed by a lunch reception. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a memorial donation be made to Lumacare Services (lumacare.ca), Bayview United Church (bayviewunitedchurch.ca) or a charitable organization of your choice.
