Obituary Overview

Forever In Our Hearts

Lily Lachmine passed away peacefully on Aug 31, 2018, at the age of 98. Born July 1st, 1920, in Wakenam, Guyana, Lily was married to Mangra Persaud until his death in 1951.

She is survived by her daughters Sursati (Unis) Deonandan, Basodai (Waveney) Gouveia, Barbara (Duksin) Girdharry, Gangadei (Ta) Deonarine, and Chandroutie (Golin) Vishnu, as well as as 29 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and a handful of great-great-grandchildren, all of whom reside either in North America or Europe.

She is pre-deceased by her two sons Lil (Boysie) and Bhanu (Roy) as well as two daughters, Iris and Juliette, the latter dying in infancy. Aside from her children, she is survived by scores of grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a handful of great great grandchildren.

Lily was a woman of great strength and fortitude. Left a widow at the age 30 with her young children, all under 12 years (and pregnant with another), she defied the odds and not only survived and raised them all to adulthood, but lived to see them flourish. She did not bemoan her circumstances but found the means to survive. She supported her family by working in the rice fields and eventually, as a produce vendor in marketplace in Georgetown. She moved to Canada in 1970 and helped raise many of her grandchildren.

In her senior years, she traveled much of the world, and always remained committed to her Hindu beliefs. In her final years, she was lovingly cared for by her devoted youngest daughter Chandroutie and her husband Hansraj, in whose home she resided. Through her life’s example of courage, strength and perseverance, Lily has left a legacy of which her descendants they can indeed be proud.
