Merritt golfed a great 18 holes with old buddies on Monday, went to hospital the next day feeling ill, and died peacefully in his hospital chair on Saturday, anticipating another visit from his daughter. Exactly what he would have wished. Born on the farm in rural Hastings County, he led an accomplished life as a professional engineer, highway and vehicle safety expert, and Professor at UofT. B.Sc, Queens, M.Sc. Purdue, Zeta Psi. Loved his golf, baseball, hockey, curling and crosswords to the end. Predeceased by his loving wife Edith of 63 years (2010), his brother Gordon and sister Sadie. Survived by his sister Margaret, son Glenn, daughter Joanne, granddaughters Krista, Katie, and Shannon, six great grandchildren, and extended family. Visitation 12:30 to 2:00 followed by a service at 2:00pm on Wednesday July 26, 2017, all at Donway Covenant United Church (230 The Donway West). Reception following at the Donalda Club (12 Bushbury Drive). No flowers please. Donations to the Joseph Henry Davis Memorial Bursary Fund in Applied Science at Queen's University appreciated. Details and online donation can be found at https://www.arbormemorial.ca/highland-scarborough. His own man for sure; a generous soul, possessed of strong opinions- freely shared.
We will miss you dearly, Grandpa. You have been such a wonderful influence in our lives, and we are so blessed that our children have had the wonderful privilege of knowing and loving their great-grandfather. Your endless dedication to family and community and your passion for education are truly admirable. May we all enjoy a long and prosperous life such as yours. Hugs and kisses.
Merritt was truly a wonderful uncle and a special man. He was always a great person to have an interesting conversation with!
Our deepest condolences.
