Condolences from family and friends

I want to extend my deepest condolences to Gale and all of Peter’s family. It was a great honour to meet Peter some 25 years ago in the midst of our various Bemister family reunions in Port Credit, the GTA, and in Carbonear, Newfoundland where the family had its origins in the New World from 1814. Peter’s Grandfather, Obadiah Gilbert Joyce, whom my father knew well, was a heroic sea captain, an iconic figure in the family. Peter himself had a remarkable career in the Canadian Armed Forces, rising to the rank of Colonel. Visiting with Peter and Gale at their home and mine was always a joy as was their participation in the Family get togethers that honoured our common ancestors from Carbonear and beyond. I would be glad to hear from Gale and Peter’s family at 613 929 6392 I might add I have grandchildren who were anxious to meet Peter in view of his connexion to his heroic grandfather whom we call uncle Gilbert. One of my granddaughters canoed around Anticosti Island a few years ago and saw the lighthouse where Uncle Gilbert’s life had been saved by the lighthouse keeper over the winter of 1874 - 1875 after his rescue from a shipwreck in a. vicious storm on 22 November 1874. She was most certainly the only family member to have seen the site since Uncle Gilbert himself had erected a gravestone more than 125 years ago. She was very proud to be Capt Joyce’s 3 x great niece and Peter’s Second cousin twice removed
