Daphne D'Souza

20-May-1914 - 22-Jun-2019

Obituary Overview

Passed into the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at the age of 105.  Hers was a life well-lived.

Devoted daughter of Norman and Grace Pacheco.  Loving wife of the late Louis Stephen D’Souza. Beloved mother of Michael, Anne, and Alan.  Sister of Phyllis, Joe, Ronald, May and Rita.  Daphne is survived by her sisters, May and Rita; her daughter, Anne; her daughter-in-law, Carmen (Michael); her grandchildren, Gillian Bartlett (Andrew), Alan D’Souza (Nadine), and Rachel Whyte (Jonathan); her great-grandchildren, Abigail and Sean Bartlett, Harper, Camden, and Kellen D’Souza, and Adelaide and Isaac Whyte; and her loving nieces and nephews in Canada, the United States, England, India, and Australia.

Daphne was born in Madras, India, on May 20, 1914.  She left home in 1933 to attend Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi, obtaining her MBBS in 1940.  Following graduation, she worked briefly at the Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi before joining the Army Medical Corps as a Captain.  She met Louis, and they were married in March of 1943.  She left the Medical Corps in 1951 in favour of becoming a full-time mother, but remained active in the medical community as a volunteer.

Daphne, Louis, and their children emigrated to England in 1962.  She returned to the medical profession, working in several psychiatric hospitals in Epsom, Surrey.  Daphne and Louis retired to Canada in 1975; they settled in the Ottawa area, where they lived happily until Louis’ passing in 1991.

Daphne remained independent and led a full life until early 2010, when she suffered a severe stroke at the age of 95.  Her final years were spent at St. Louis Residence in Orleans, where she was cared for by a devoted team on Floor 2AB, Pastoral Care, and her daughter, Anne, who was with her until the end.

Throughout her life, Daphne remained devoted to her faith and was a practising third-order Franciscan.  Her family will remember her resilience, her infallible memory, her social nature, her generosity, and her laughter.

Family and friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home Orleans Chapel, Thursday, June 27th from 7-9pm.  Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am on Friday, June 28th at Divine Infant Catholic Church, Private family burial to follow.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Mother Teresa Missionaries of Charity (2465 rue Champagne, Montreal, QC, H2K 2G9) are welcomed.
