Obituary Overview

Linda Walker

May 2, 1950 - February 4, 2019

It is with very heavy hearts that we tell you our Mom passed away on Monday in the early afternoon, peacefully at home. We can't describe the feeling of profound loss that we are dealing with, but we grasp to the fact that Mom is no longer suffering, and she is now reunited with our father, Peter, who passed away almost 10 years ago.

Linda moves to the afterlife ahead of her son Jeffrey (Christine) and daughter Christine (Ryan) and her five grandchildren Lauren, Amelia, Ashley, Sarah & Brendan. She is also survived by her Mother Connie (Hector), sister Sandy and brother Donald (Fran), their children, and extended family including the Adam’s and Donovan’s.

Mom was a character, a consummate caregiver, loving mother, devoted wife, genuine friend, strong willed, and a kindred spirit.

Her 44-year professional career in nursing began with graduation from the Vanier School of Nursing in 1971, upon which she started work at the Civic Hospital. Once plans for the new Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario was announced she decided to transition there to Neonatal care in 4-East. This became a very rewarding part of Mom’s professional life, but she was also balancing the needs of a growing family with marriage to Peter in 1973 then the introduction of her son in 1975 and daughter in 1976. Where she found the energy to balance both lives while always maintain a smile paired with an insightful & warm disposition is a mystery to this day.

In the mid-1980’s Mom enrolled at Ottawa University to complete her bachelor’s degree in science (Nursing), followed by Carleton University for studies in Law related to Nursing Care. Upon graduation she changed career paths and become director of the then, Ottawa Centre Nursing Home. Thus, began her transition from pediatric to geriatric nursing which culminated with 15 years at Carleton Lodge devoted to easing the physical & mental pain of late-life patients. Family life was important to mom and she always had a plan in motion from organizing regular, exotic vacations to family time at the cottage and volunteering her time and artistic talents in any way she could help while we were kids.

Our lives were enormously enriched by her love, patience and guidance. Her selfless giving continued when our father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She was able to apply her skills in the most personal way which allowed dad his wish of passing at home. Mom eventually sold our childhood home but went on to build a large modern home where our modest little cottage used to rest on the shores of Buckham’s Bay just west of Ottawa. She had envisioned many years of making new & happy memories for our growing family at Casa Walker but illness had its own horrible plan. Right until the end our mom shielded us from the cold reality of terminal cancer by dismissing the pain she was enduring. Despite its best effort, it couldn’t break mom’s spirit. She left this world with chin high while wearing her famous smile.

We leave you with an appropriate quote from one of Mom’s favourite childhood stories, Beatrix Potter’s, Peter Rabbit, “I hold that a strongly marked personality can influence descendants for generations. Believe there is a great power silently working all things for good, behave yourself and never mind the rest”…. We will have succeeded in this life if we achieve half of what she accomplished. Our love, forever.

Mom's funeral service will be held on Monday, February 11 at Kelly Funeral Home, 3000 Woodroffe Avenue, Ottawa. The public service, 9 - 11am followed by a liturgy then refreshments, prior to her internment at Hope Cemetery that same afternoon. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Arnprior Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario or a Cancer Research project of your choosing.

My sincere condolences. I remember your Mother well at the earlier auctions that i attended when your father was alive and your Mother was registering bidders and helping out. I was saddened upon hearing the news of her passing.
