In Loving Memory
Elaine French passed peacefully on July 6, 2020 in her 98th year. She was born in Milestone, SK, daughter of Matthew Elliot and Margaret Glenn Elliot. She maintained her friendships from her Milestone days all her life.
Elaine worked as a stenographer in Regina until 1946 when, on a visit to Calgary, she met Bill French on a blind date. They married in December, 1948 and made their home in the community of Glendale, where they raised their three children. In 1968, Elaine began a rewarding 19 year career in the Personnel Department of the University of Calgary, where she managed the hiring of many of the university administrative staff.
Apart from full-time work and the demands of raising a family, Elaine and Bill ran a successful farming operation. In retirement, Elaine travelled, attended concerts and theatres, and was highly involved in her grandsons’ lives. Her kind and gracious nature and great sense of humour made a positive impression on anyone who met her. Her gentle demeanour hid an inner toughness which enabled her to overcome many challenges, particularly in her later years.
She set a high standard for herself in everything she did and wanted all her family to do their best in whatever they pursued. Elaine was predeceased by Bill and by her sister, Yvonne Arnot.
She is survived by her children Elaine Tomm (Bill), Nancy (Frank Johnston) and William; five grandchildren, Jonathan (Sarah Nykolaishen), Matthew and Kevin Tomm; Ian and James Johnston; and great-granddaughters Hannah and Elise Tomm-Nykolaishen.
The family thanks the staff of Bethany Calgary and Amica at Aspen Woods for their wonderful care of Elaine.
