Obituary Overview

In Loving Memory

Ruth Joanna Leufkens nee O’Donnell
October 28, 1927 to February 16, 2021
Born in Avondale, P.E.I. and peacefully transitioned to Heaven at the tender age of 93 from Lakeridge Hospital in Ajax, Ontario.
Mom moved from P.E.I. to Toronto where she met and married Dad, Bert Leufkens (deceased) and together they raised a big and energetic family. Mom will be forever cherished by her 7 children, Joan (Garry), Bernie (Roisin), Mike (Elaine), Helen DiCintio, Bob (Debbie), Janet, Leona Newlands (Ross), her 14 wonderful grandchildren Lenita, Brendan, Ceila, Tiarna, Brad, Wes, Michael, Alycia, Alex, Julie, James, Jon-Ross, Jackson, Holly and 13 precious great-grandchildren Lily, Charlie, Emily, Nathan, Wyatt, Clara, Nickolas, Addison, Laila, Mary Jane, Remi, Jacqueline and Hanna.
Mom is survived by her sisters Bernice Callaghan and Barbara McIsaac. Predeceased by her parents Alphonsus and Anne O’Donnell, and siblings Phil O’Donnell, Bernie O’Donnell, Teresa McCarville and Jean Carmichael.
While Mom’s tiny body continued to fail her, she remained positive, resilient and delightful. Never one to complain or feel sorry for herself, Mom embraced every challenge and her spirit remained strong. At age 82 she became completely deaf and subsequently learned to text, read lips and understand a few words of sign language. That is how she handled setbacks.
Strongly influenced by faith she never gave up and she set a shining example of unconditional love and compassion for everyone. We will reminisce about Mom’s great sense of humour, her sweet demeanor, and the huge meals that she could devour, especially desserts!
Mom will be sadly missed but will remain in our hearts forever. We love you Mom aka Cutie Pie.

Dear Leufkens Family So sorry for the loss of your mother. She was a remarkable lady with a loving spirit and quiet strength. I always enjoyed hearing from Joan how she was getting on in the retirement home, and was amazed when her hearing failed and she learned to text. Such resilience! A life to be celebrated and what a beautiful legacy she left behind , in such a large loving family.❤️ Sincere Condolences Jamie Letros

My deepest condolences to the Leufkens Family. I was truly blessed to have had the pleasure of Ruth Leufkens as my Aunt! She was an amazing woman, living by the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would have them do unto you). She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her! Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls and the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen
