Shawn Walker

A letter from Shawn’s Mother:

January 29, 1987 was the day I first held Shawn Michael Walker in my arms. Michael, his dad, who after a battle with cancer passed away on July 11, 2015, was the happiest man in the world to ever hold his first born child. Shawn's loving baby sister, Samantha Leigh, met her big brother on November 18, 1989. Through the years, Shawn became not only her loving brother, but her best friend and mentor.

Shawn's life growing up consisted of swimming, soccer, hockey, rugby and football but his passion was always science, especially computer technology. It was no surprise that this passion and his natural ability led him to York University's Earth and Space Science department. Shawn was soon to complete his PhD, specializing in robotics and artificial intelligence. Although I had difficulty understanding the complexities of his research, I know that he made significant contributions to his field and was well respected among his colleagues.

One of the most impactful personal experiences for Shawn was working with autistic children. He developed a bond with Philip, one of his charges who became a little brother to Shawn. We know Shawn would be ecstatic that our family has created a fund through his previous place of employment, Meta Center, that will support families and their children with autism through camp programs.

When I look back over the years at the stages of my son’s life, I cannot be anything but proud of my boy; Shawn had become a man committed to his family, his friends, and his sweetheart Cinzia. Sammy and I will hold Shawn close to our hearts and love him forever, as we all will.

At Shawn’s service there will be a photo box available for collection. Memories are all we have left, and a picture holds scores of memories. We would love you to bring your favourite picture of Shawn and share one of your fondest memories on the back, so that your memories can become ours.

Thank you for all your support and love,

Doris
