Aliene Krahn, beloved wife of the late Jacob Krahn of Calgary, passed away at Newport Harbour Care Center on Monday, May 11, 2020 at the age of 91 years.
She was the loving mother of George Krahn (Frieda) of Prince George, Linda Bohnet (Ron) of Calgary, Terry Krahn (Bev) of Calgary, Jim Krahn (Phylis) of Calgary, and Darrell Krahn (Lynn) of Calgary. She will also be dearly missed by her ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and her sister Elsa Janischewski and Elsa’s family. She was predeceased by her brother Teodor in 2012 and loving husband Jake in 2013.
Aliene experienced many hardships as a young girl living in the Ukraine/Russia during World War II. Together with her mother Olga and sister Elsa, Aliene lived for a short time in refugee camps before coming to Canada in 1948. She met Jacob Krahn through the Scarborough Mennonite Church (later known as the First Mennonite Church of Calgary) and they married in 1952. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and for a time worked at the Palliser Furniture factory in Calgary. Her 1994 reunification with her long-lost brother Teodor was a particularly significant and joyous event in her life.
Aliene was an integral part of her church community at Foothills Mennonite Calgary. She delighted in caring for her children and grandchildren by making her home a warm and welcoming place. Her ‘servants’ heart was demonstrated in that everyone was welcome, and no one was turned away.
