Obituary Overview

Lovingly Remembered

Gordon Harvey Potter passed away peacefully on Friday May 8th at his home on the farm at the age of 89 years. He now joins his beloved Mildred, wife of 67 years who predeceased him a year ago.

He will be forever loved and missed by his family of four children: Neil (Marlene) Potter, Terry (Wayne) Hillestad, Lois (Les) Dugdale and Russell (Pam) Potter. Gordon will be lovingly remembered by 10 grandchildren: Melissa (Todd) Christensen, Andrea (Murray) Slough, Nicole Potter, Wes (Natasha) Hillestad, Jared Hillestad, Darcy (Rhonda) Dugdale, Ryan (Jessica) Dugdale, Erin (Shane) Sawley, Devon (Tristan) Potter, and Jocelyn Potter. He was a proud great-grandfather to 19 great-grandchildren and companion to Wilks, Hazel and Madison.

Gordon was born and raised in Strathmore, the son of Harvey and Gertie Potter. He was an active Alumni of Olds College where he made lifelong friendships. After he married Mildred in 1952 they settled on the farm in Dalemead and raised their family. Gordon and Mildred were members of the Indus Livewires where they enjoyed cards, potlucks and fellowship. Gordon loved bowling with his friends in Strathmore and later at Paradise Lanes in Calgary. He liked sports of all kinds and has many mementos to attest to his skills. He was a supporter of the hockey and ringette games of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gordon’s passion was farming. He was mentored by his father-in-law Bud Thompson and spent the rest of his life sharing his knowledge and experience with the following generations. Gordon had an exceptional mechanical ability which he applied to machinery repairs and improvements, motorcycles, snowmobiles and all kinds of toys for kids.

The family would like to acknowledge the care and support provided by the Home Care and Palliative care nurses and doctors, the many members of the community and the Dalemead Church.

Doug and I would like to extend our deepest sympathies in the passing of your dear father and grandfather. He was such a kind and caring person and we very much admired his optimistic attitude. Gordon always showed a genuine interest in how everyone was doing and we appreciated our chats about how things were going on the farm. He will be dearly missed! Thinking of you all!!
