Gudrun Vilborg Paton (Hall)

Obituary Overview

Lovingly Remembered

On Friday May 8 Gudrun (mom) was quietly called home. Mom was born on September 5, 1935, in Wadena, Saskatchewan, and grew up on the family farm in Wynyard. She left the farm in 1953 to attend secretarial school in Winnipeg. During her working career, she was last employed by the Government of Manitoba where she retired in 2000.

Mom and dad were married on July 26, 1958, at St. Paul’s United Church, and they subsequently lived on the west side of Winnipeg before moving to Willow Park Community Housing Co-Op (Dorset Street) around 1966 and called that home for approximately 35 years. During their early married life, they spent some of their free time square dancing in Winnipeg. Mom took a break in her working career to raise both Lori and me and our cousins Andrea Pilati (Jackson) and Garth Jackson which she babysat for a few years.

Mom and Dad both moved out to Calgary in 2002 to be closer to both Lori and me and their four grandchildren; Jades & Myles Fischer and Ben & Lauren Paton. Both Mom and Dad were very active at Brentview Baptist Church in Calgary. Brentview was a special place for them as they received a warm welcome into the community and grew through their spirituality and fellowship of members of the church.

Mom had a gentle spirit and rarely had anything negative to say about anyone and she was a woman of deep faith. We will remember her for her shortbread cookies, puffed wheat squares (it was always a treat finding a square with a load of chocolate on the bottom), and her passion for sewing which included making us shirts (how I hated those fitting sessions).

Mom was predeceased by her husband, Harold in 2016, her brothers Leopold and Norman, and in-laws Gerry Cook and Andy Jackson. We would like to thank the staff of the Bethany Care Center especially those on Unit 3 South who provided Mom with care and comfort during her time as a resident.

Mom, we will miss you and we will always remember you for your gracious and quiet, unflappable demeanor and your appreciation for the simple things in life.

Until we see you again – lots of love Ross (Joann), Lori (Kurtis)

Condolences from family and friends

We had the good fortune to know Gudron and Harold when they lived in Winnipeg and we got to know them at Seven Oaks Alliance church. They were the kindest couple and we missed them terribly when they moved. Their friendship to me and my husband Jaime when we were new Christians had such a deep impact on us. Our condolences to the family at the loss of such a special lady.
