Obituary Overview

A Legacy of Love

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Code, beloved mother of Christina Tortorelli (Marc), passed away at the Foothills Hospital on May 12, 2020 at the age of 87.

She was predeceased by her devoted husband Duncan and her parents Jack and Leota Daniels. Gwen loved her grandchildren with her whole heart: James (Jennifer), Sandra, and Catherine (Rob), and was so proud to be great-grandmother to six wonderful boys: Bradin, Austin, Logan, Brent, Lincoln and Oliver, as well as her beautiful great granddaughter Bentley Christina. She is also survived by her brother Hartley Daniels (Rose); her nieces and nephews: Diane, Byron (Annette), Scott (Janken), Barbara, Lynne (Barry), David (Linda) and Laurie (Elaine), and her many great nieces and nephews.

Gwen was born in Regina Saskatchewan, moving to Calgary as a young child with her older brother and her parents. As a family, they built a house in Rosedale where she lived for most of her young years. Gwen graduated from Crescent Heights High School and Stenographers College, and began her career in business and then as a paralegal. Upon retiring, she embarked on a new career as a tutor and teacher’s aide for children struggling with English as a Second Language. Of all the careers she had, teaching was the one she loved the most. As she moved into a senior’s residence and later to the Brentwood Care Centre, she continued to teach through Linkages – a program that supports students and seniors to interact across generations. She was part of Linkages until March 2020.

In lieu of flowers, it is Gwen’s wish that you make a donation to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Mental Health Programs, the Calgary Humane Society, or a charity of your choice. A private family service will be held.
