M. Jean Walker
Jean was born June 1st, 1931 in Guelph, Ontario. She passed away on June 18th, 2021 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, with loving family by her side.
She was happily married to her soul mate, Ray Walker, since 1976, and he predeceased her in November of 2020.
Predeceased by her parents Christina (Tina) and Albert Budd, brother Norm Budd and his wife Peggy, brother Glenn Budd and his wife Beth, brother Ken Budd, sister Betty Ann Jones and brother-in-law Vin Walker.
Lovingly remembered as the World’s Best Mom by her daughters Cynthia Mountford (Paul Crawford), Sue Nieuwenburg (Randy) of Oshawa, and son Jamie Mountford (Erin Sokoloski) of Dundas. Nana to her beloved granddaughter, Claire Mountford (Nate Lee), and step-grandson Jake Crawford (Tara) and great granddaughter Avery.
She will be missed by her remaining siblings, Del Budd (Colleen), Helen Fein and sister-in-law Jeannette Budd, many nieces and nephews, as well as sisters-in-law Eileen Andrew (Ed), Jean Walker and brother-in-law Ron Walker (Georgie) and their families.
Jean had three step-daughters Sandy McCauley (Jim) of Owen Sound, Debbie MacLellan (Paul) of Oshawa, and Toni Ann Quinn (Dan) of Whitby.
Jean retired in 1990 as Executive-Director of Big Brothers of Oshawa-Whitby, a position she held for 12 years. Her passion was volunteering. She was on the Board of Directors of several organizations, including the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Oshawa Senior Citizen’s Centre, the Social Planning Council, Child Abuse and Family Violence Prevention, the Volunteer Action Centre and Big Brothers.
Jean volunteered behind the scenes for a fashion show in Sherwood Park, Alberta. She taught Sunday school in Burnaby, BC and assisted in staging the Christmas Pageant there. In 1982, she was honoured when the Oshawa Fiesta Committee invited her to be one of the judges for the Miss Fiesta Queen Contest. She was asked to participate in McDonald House Day as a hostess at a local McDonald’s restaurant. Jean did interviews on Rogers Cable TV over a period of three years, for both Big Brothers and the Oshawa Senior Citizen’s Centre, which she found exciting and rewarding. Jean was especially proud to have been co-chairperson of the committee that initiated the expansion of the Northview Centre, where one of Oshawa Senior Centres is located and was thrilled to be among the talented writers for the Seniors Newsletter Committee.
Jean was very intelligent and was never afraid to try new things. At 90 she was still emailing, using Facebook to keep in touch with people and got a new printer for her 90th birthday so that she could continue to make greeting cards for family and friends.
Jean’s family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who cared for her in her short stay at Lakeridge Health.

Rest well, Aunt Jean. I’ll miss your wit, your sense of humor, and the joy you brought to us all; but it was time to reunite with loved ones who’ve passed before, especially your beloved Ray. I wish I could be there today, the way you were there for me so many years ago when my mother passed. I’ll always cherish your kind words and deeds of support and your friendship through the years. We have special memories to bring us comfort and joy until we meet again.
