David Dyer Horsley, 77, passed on the 3rd of May 2021 at Niagara General Hospital in Niagara Falls, Ontario after a short illness.
David, also known as "The Gadget man", "Dad", "Poppa", "Chuck", "Pa", was born on the 23rd day of April 1944 in Hamilton, Ontario to Ed and Edna Horsley. Raised in Niagara Falls, David was an avid "piston head", with a passion that began as a young lad building go carts with his dad. As a young man he travelled an epic motorcycle trip from Niagara to Venezuela and back with his pal Billy Edgar. He was a motorcycle Hill Climber and was a founding member of The Welland County Motorcycle Club. After his love of motorcycles he turned his passion to cars owning an award winning 1970 Chevelle SS, and his last ride: a workhorse of a Hummer.
A skilled Industrial Millwright since 1972, David specialized in optical and laser alignment at E.S. Fox with the Millwright's Union 1007; he was well respected and liked by his colleagues. He was never so proud as when his grandson Daniel Steel followed in his footsteps so successfully.
After moving north and building a log cabin on 100 acres of woodland Northern Ontario, with his first wife Sharon Wright and their daughter Rachel, he married Shirley Twinn and welcomed her and her three children Patricia, Gregory and Susan into his life and his heart.
Nothing was more important than family to David. Every child and animal loved him. He was an incredibly hard worker, who applied his intelligence, diligence and creativity to every project or hobby from playing the coronet in various bands as a youth, to playing Willie Nelson songs on his saw with a violin bow or playing Andre Segovia on his classical guitar.
David was always interested in living off grid, from his battery powered home in Christian Valley, Nipissing, Ontario, to his solar powered cottage in Haliburton, Ontario. David taught his son Gregory how to operate and maintain his own solar powered home also in Haliburton. His ingenuity and ability to make things work held no boundaries.
David led a life of service, always there to help with tasks big and small. Sharing his skills, time, humour, and his care with family, friends and neighbours alike. His partnership with Shirley was the truest love of both of their lives.
David will be missed by his wife Shirley and children Rachel (Stephen, Darwin, Posie), Patricia (Donny, Daniel, Elizabeth, Lily, Izzy, Evelyn, Danny), Greg (Deanna, Matthew, Chloe), Susie (Paul, Cillian). David is predeceased by his brother Warren Horsley and missed dearly by his nephew Joel (Denise). His brothers-in-law Gregg, James, and Clifford Twinn loved him as if he was one of their own. David is also mourned by his life-long friend and cousin Robert Boyter. He will be reunited with his best pet friends Maggie, Sadie, and Queenie.
